On Friday, February 16, 3018, The Board of Trustees of Holy Cross Ministries of Utah announced that Maria Farrington has decided to retire.  The agency as a whole has extended their deepest appreciation to Maria and her dedication to Holy Cross over the past three years as CEO. "After 39 years of professional work with social service non-profits, my time with Holy Cross Ministries has capped what has been an impactful career both in San Antonio, Texas and in Utah. I look forward to spending time with my husband, Bob of 42 years, our new grandsons and ongoing discovery of new hiking trails wherever they are." stated Maria Farrington, on her upcoming retirement.

Working with United Way of Utah, Salt City School District and Discovery Gateway Children's museum Maria has touched many lives and organizations in Utah in seeking programs to assist those in need of social, educational and health programs to make them whole. Her tenure at Holy Cross Ministries is marked with the acquisition of a grant by the Whitney Foundation, expanding educational operations in Park City, Utah, and creation of partnerships benefitting low income, immigrant and the educationally underserved.

"Holy Cross Ministries has been the beneficiary of Maria's solid leadership and her passion for the mission of the organization.  Maria's years of outstanding leadership have placed Holy Cross Ministries in a position of fiscal and operational excellence and in position to continue assisting increased numbers of clients" stated Raymond Dardano, Chairman of Holy Cross Ministries' Board of Trustees.

On September 22, at the Berlioz and Sait Saens Symphony Performance, Utah Symphony | Utah Opera honored Patricia A. Richards by unveiling her portrait --the newest portrait to adorn Abravanel Hall.  Frank Joklik remarks from the evening are included below:

    • Pat's commitment and passion for Utah Symphony | Utah Opera is immediately evident to anyone who meets her.  She has great dedication not only to see USUO service, but also thrive.  Pat and her husband, Bill Nichols, made the first leadership gift to USUO's comprehensive campaign in 2010 saying that she cannot ask others to make an exemplary gift without leading as board chair, a position she served in for nearly a decade.
    • During her term as chair she provided continuity and guidance during the transitions that led to the hiring of Melia Tourangeau and Thierry Fischer. And through the 2015- 16 season, she served 'the organization as Interim President & CEO during the search that led to Paul Meecham's appointment Pat continues to serve USUO as an active member of the Lifetime Board. She deeply believes in the value of what we bring to this community and demonstrates that belief on a daily basis. Pat is a model for volunteers and patrons to the arts.
    • Her additional community presence has included service as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Board of United Way of Salt Lake, President of the Salt Lake Rotary Foundation, as well as service on the National Advisory Board of the David Eccles School of Business, the World Leaders Lecture Forum Advisory Cabinet of the University of Utah's Tanner Humanities Center the Westminster College Board of Trustees, and the Utah State Governor's Economic Council. She serves the broader arts community as a member of the Board of Directors of the League of American Orchestras, which she chaired from 2014-2017
    • In short, Patricia A Richards is an inspiration to us all.

Our very own Pat Christensen was honored on November 9, 2016 by the Federal Bar Association with its Distinguished Service Award.  UWF member Jen Tomchak made introductory remarks commenting on Pat’s strengths as a lawyer, friend and mentor. Pat gave a wonderful acceptance speech, remembering among other things the early days of her career when one federal judge did not allow women to make appearances in his courtroom.   The award is much deserved!
